Unaware of my birth options, I used an OB to birth both my babies in a hospital. Being a certified birth Doula for the last 3 years; I am more educated about all the different birth options in Texas. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have chosen different birth options for my birthing experiences.
Did you know in the state of Texas, you have the birth option to choose a midwife as your health care provider? There are 2 types of midwives, Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). A CNM is a registered nurse who has graduated from a nurse midwifery education program. A CPM is knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has meet the standards for midwifery certification. I have done numerous births with CNMs and CPMs; totally adore and LOVE being a Doula alongside all of them!
How do you decide whether to choose a CNM or CPM? Interviews!! Interview as many midwives as you need, until you find the one you connect with the best. You want to go with the midwife that has similar views as you and the one you will be the most comfortable with.
Midwives are very caring people. They will spend time with you at each prenatal visit to make sure you feel informed about your pregnancy and birth. They understand the female body, how a baby is to be born, follow the mom’s instincts and their own to help their client birth their baby. I am utterly amazed at their skills, care/support, and professionalism for their clients. From what I have witnessed with midwifery care, these ladies go far beyond expectations as a healthcare provider.
Midwives can help expecting couples that desire to birth at home, at a birth center or in a hospital. Depending on the birth environment you desire and the healthiness of your pregnancy, you can find a midwife to support you in your ideal environment. The Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area is saturated with natural birth options!
